The Cybernetic Ensemble is a project by Nicola L. Hein that explores musical improvisation between humans and machines. With the help of AI approaches, Hein is able to have the robot musicians interact musically and improvise together with human musicians. The piece explores the cybernetic formation of musical structures and musical improvisation in real time, blurring the boundaries between artificial intelligence and human creativity. The live interaction raises questions: How creative can robots be? How quickly can they “understand” and read the musical situations that arise? What can AI mean for our creativity in the future? And: How can artificial intelligence sound? The interplay between man and machine results in a joint piece of music full of autonomous creativity – respectful, attentive and with subtle depth.
