We want sausage without animals and war without perpetrators. And in both cases we managed to outsource, hide and diversify the crime to such an extent that you no longer have to watch the taboo. animals being killed. Targets that are eliminated by remote control.
It’s battles without a butcher. This is the way out for a society of sensitive people in which the genocidal program is embedded.
(Nataly Bleuel in conversation with Marc Sinan)
Bombs drop, bombs kill. Daily and yet anonymous. Who is the perpetrator and who is the victim in war is often in the eye of the beholder. The concert DIFFERENT BOMBS is composed research for 8 electric guitars, 8 violas, 8 double basses and a voice on the simultaneity of victimhood and perpetration. Marc Sinan has taken the risk to investigate the circumstances and consequences of bombings in an urgent but non-moral way and to deal with his own family history.
In DIFFERENT BOMBS he tells the story of his aunt, who fell under the temptations of the National Socialists in Berlin and, as a girl born in 1929, lived through severely traumatizing war years. Based on Steve Reich’s work DIFFERENT TRAINS (1988), Sinan incorporates the transcript of conversations with her into his composition. The slightly alienated statements made by his 91-year-old aunt are sung and spoken by his eldest daughter. Everything is in her words: structural complicity, injury, hubris of the perpetrator, the trauma of hunger, fear of death and despair.
DIFFERENT BOMBS is a rampage in turmoil, pain and anger about us humans. The play is an allegory for the wrong path we find ourselves in when we think we can avoid responsibility for our actions.
The premiere will be framed by a panel discussion:
DIFFERENT THOUGHTS, DIFFERENT BOMBS
How and what do we agree on (in a society) when my friend, my aunt, my colleague denies the legitimacy of science, politics, media, facts, my reality? If we live on different planets, mine: democracy, yours: paranoia? Hit it, run away – or do something together?
A discussion with instructions on how to argue properly
